چکیده

~~~T~!\g. We propose a new type of semantic memory, called thread memory. Thc primitives or this memory are threads, dcfined as keyed multilink, loop-frce chains, which link semantic nodes. All links run from superordinate cat.egories to subordinate categories. This is the opposite direction to those in the usual tree structure in that brother nodes in the trce share t.he str"ucture above their common ancestors. The most valuable fcilture of the thread memory is its capacity to learn. A program which can lei1rn concepts using as data children's primer books, was written by R. Greenhlatt and runs on the LISP-MACHINE at the MIT-AI Laboratory. We have considered the thread memory as working hypothesis for exploring the mechanisms of naming deficits in aphasia and the ways of rehabilitation.
Core-Lexicon and Main-Concept Production During Picture-Sequence Description in Adults Without Brain Damage and Adults With Aphasia.
PURPOSE We sought to identify the core lexicon of a picture-description task using transcripts from the AphasiaBank database and to determine differences in core-lexicon usage between control speakers and persons with aphasia (PWAs). We also investigated the relationship between core lexicon and an established discourse measure, main-concept analysis. METHOD A core lexicon was developed by id...
Designing a Playful Communication Support Tool for Persons with Aphasia
Many studies have investigated ways to leverage communication with people with aphasia. Here, a new concept is developed for people with non-severe aphasia in a way that accesses the emotional and unaware layer of a conversation and then communicates certain information to the partner hence; introducing new dynamics and structure to a conversation. We present the concept with detailed design an...
Making the Case for Construction Grammar
The good news for advocates of Construction Grammar (CxG) is that language scholars from a wide array of backgrounds have adopted its fundamental insight: knowledge of language includes grammatical generalizations of varied grains. CxG, or constructionbased syntax more generally, informs models of acquisition (Tomasello 2003, Diessel and Tomasello 2000), aphasia (Gahl et al. 2000), syntactic pr...
Rehabilitation of People with a Brain Injury Through the Lens of Networked Learning. Identity Formation in Distributed Virtual Environments
This paper will demonstrate how avatar-mediated interactions and learning in networks might lead to identity formation and rehabilitation of language after a brain injury. With references to Vygotsky's notion of the social origins of higher mental functions (1978) and Hutchins claims that cognition is something that is embodied and externally distributed. (Hutchins, 1995), we will discuss ident...
Presence, completeness, and accuracy of main concepts in the connected speech of non-brain-damaged adults and adults with aphasia.
A standard rule-based system was used to evaluate the presence, accuracy, and completeness of main concepts in the connected speech of 20 non-brain-damaged adults and 20 adults with aphasia. Main concepts form a skeletal outline of the most important information (or "gist") in a message. The interjudge and intrajudge reliability of the main concept scoring system and the test-retest stability o...
